Haris Medunjanin To Monchengladbach or Bremen?

Maccabi Tel-Aviv’s attacking midfielder Haris Medunjanin is being linked with German clubs Borussia Monchengladbach and Werder Bremen. He has already been linked with the Italian club Lazio and German club Bayer Leverkusen.  Medunjanin who plays in a deep lying attacking role, scored 8 goals in 32 games last year. He is left footed and is a specialist from set pieces. Medunjanin scored in his last game for Bosnia against Albania on June 7th of this year. Although not the fastest player, he is an excellent passer of the ball and s very composed in possession. He came to Tel-Aviv last year for about 1.8 million Euros so his asking price will be likely higher than that.  However I see it as unlikely that Medunjanin will move this summer unless Maccabi receives a big offer for the player.

    Seem like Maccabi is unloading several quality players … what’s the strategy? money issues? Also, really cool to see several Israel footballers head for the Bundesliga? Why so?

    The issue is more with the players. All the big clubs are doing ok fiscally, its the players that want to leave, so they can get paid more, and play in a league with more exposure and accolades. I don’t think this just a mentality limited to Israel, its quite common for players from lower league to go to the big four leagues of England, Spain, Germany and Italy.

    The concept of striving for greener pastures in Europe is common and makes sense but it seems like lately (this year in particular) Israel has been more active in this department. Or, maybe I am just paying more attention to it since 1.FCK, my hometown team, has acquired two local gems.

    The quality of Israeli football has increased, and as a result the Israeli League is getting more attention from the Big 5 (Eng, Spa, Ger, Ita, Fra). Maccabi and Goldhaar have a different strategy than other Israeli clubs. They have ambition to be on the level of a Panathinaikos, Olympiacos, Copenhagen, etc. So I don’t see them selling their best players, unless a player demands it.

      They’ll have to get better foreign players then. I don’t rate Pavicevic and Nivaldo that highly, they are average players.

        True, but they also have guys like Medunjanin and Konate, which are quality players. And they have very good domestic players as well. To be on the level with Copenhagen, Basel, Panathinaikos you need a good mix of both foreign and domestic players. I think Maccabi is moving in the right direction.
