Israel State Cup Scores and National Team News

State Cup

Yesterday the round of the last 32 in the Israel State Cup was held. It is the Israeli version of the FA Cup in England. Ten games were played yesterday with a couple upsets. The eventual winner of the competition will get a chance to compete in the Europa League next year. Today the remaining six games will be played to determine the last sixteen teams in the competition. Here are the scores below.

Teams

Score

Penalties

Winners

Losers

Maccabi Herzliya Givat Ulgah 1-0
Natzrat Illit Asi Gilboa 2-1
Kfar Saba Beitar Tel Aviv 2-2 4-2
Bnei Lod Beitar Jerusalem 0-0 4-3

Maccabi Petah Tikva

Bnei Sachnin 2-0
Hapoel Beersheva Bnei Yehuda 3-3 4-1
Ramat Gan Kfar Kassem 3-2
Umm el Fahm Afula 3-2
Netanya Nes Tziona 2-1
Hapoel  Jerusalem Maccabi Tel Aviv 1-0

Most of the games were predictable, however there were a few  upsets. Notably Bnei Lod of the second division beating Beitar Jerusalem on penalties, and Hapoel Jerusalem of the second division beating Maccabi Tel Aviv on a late goal. I would attribute both losses to the coaches of Beitar and Maccabi both of whom were previous failures at their old jobs. Unfortunately there is an old buddy network that ensures poor coaches get hired. Its a shame that big teams like Beitar and Maccabi will not be in the later rounds of the cup.

National Team News

Israel’s U-16 team returned from the Algarve Tournament in Albufeira, Portugal with some success. The Under 16’s lost 1-0 to Italy. Drew 0-0 with Holland, and beat Portugal 2-0.  This is good news for Israel’s youth teams, which have been getting dismal results recently.

Eli Guttman, the new National Team coach, has announced a training camp in Austria to be held before the team’s friendly with Germany on June 1st. He also announced that the team will play in a friendly game against the Czech National team on May 26th. The team will leave the camp on May 29th for Leipzig, where the friendly against Germany will be played. Many in Israel are hoping that Guttman can produce results with the National Team after a series of perceived failures by previous coaches.
