Tel Aviv Is Yellow Again

Maccabi Tel Aviv won a pulsating derby 1-0 against bitter rivals Hapoel Tel Aviv yesterday. Eliran Atar provided the goal, after Yoav Ziv was taken down in the penalty box by Na’al Hutaba. Atar converted the penalty for his 9th goal of the year. The game ended on a bitter note though, with Hapoel Tel Aviv’s fans throwing garbage on the pitch, and Salim Toama and Avihai Yadin were both sent off. The win was Maccabi’s first in over four years over Hapoel, ending a drought for the biggest club in Israel.  In other Ligat Ha’al news, Beitar Jerusalem scored a shock win against league leaders Kiryat Shmona. When the game was near its end, Kiryat Shmona defender Shir Tzedek handled the ball in the penalty area, the referee pointed to the spot and Eran Levy dispatched it, bringing excitement to what was otherwise a dull game; it ended 1-0. Maccabi Haifa also won 1-0 over Hapoel Acco to move into fourth place. Maccabi Netanya climbed backed in contention for the top 6 places with a 3-1 win over Bnei Sakhnin. Sakhnin now hasn’t won in over three games. Rishon LeZion beat Hapoel Petah Tikva 1-0 in a game of bottom dwellers. Hapoel Be’er Sheva beat Ashdod 2-1  for their second straight win. Hapoel Haifa won 2-0 over Ramat HaSharon, and Bnei Yehuda and Maccabi Petah Tikva tied 2-2; Another thrilling week in Ligat Ha’al.
